Grapp Res 5 Pilkington Res 4 - 29/10/11

Manager Darren Davies made it clear to his team that was a big game in Grappenhall's season, lying a point behind the current champions Grappenhall could not afford to lose further ground towards the top end of the league. Davies was happy to have a big squad following last weeks struggle at Middlewich.
Grappenhall started brightly and created numerous chances in the early stages. Eventually Grappenhall broke a disciplined Pilkington offise trap as Todd broke the line and slotted past the keeper at the second time of asking. However, within 5 minutes Grappenhall found themselves 2-1 down after Pilkington responded with a goal from a corner and a fluke 40 yard free-kick that was meant to be a cross. Grappenhall had to respond and did through a lovely finish from Macintyre from the edge of the box, this was quickly followed by a lovely header from Ball who beat the keeper in getting to the ball 1st. Grappenhall now had to see out the half but were unable to do so and Pilkington scored on the break to make it 3-3 at half-time.
The 2nd half was a lot quieter with the number of chances for both teams limited. However, with 20 minutes or so to go the referee allowed Pilkington a close offside call and a good cross led to a smart finish at the back post, 4-3 Pilkington. Grappenhall who had not drawn all season would have now been happy with the point. However, on the stroke of full-time, Ranni was brought down in the box - definite penalty. The same player stepped up to make it 4-4. Grappenhall showing the immense spirit they often display were not happy with the point and pressured the Pilkington back line in injury time, leading to a cross from Todd and a flick from Ranni into the path of substitute Mcgrath, GOAL, 5-4. Mcgrath scoring his 1st competative goal in over 5 years with the club.
Grappenhall now go into back to back games with local rivals Rylands starting with the QF of the cup next Saturday - bonfire night - hopefully there will be more fireworks down at Stockton Lane for Davies' men…….
