Grapp Res 3 Gamesley 1 - 13/08/11

Grappenhall welcomed Gamesley to the lane and were hopeful they could build on the positives from Thursday night.  Davies was aware of Gamesley and how they like to play and as such moved Elcoat out of the back four and into midfield alongside Mark Kane.

The 1st half was a predictable scrappy affair but Grappenhall looked solid and the back four consisting of McGrath, Buckley, Ross and Matt Carr were eliminating any threat that seemed to be posed. Going forward Grappenhall lacked ideas at time and this was set to be the big talking point for the manager and his assistant at the half-time interval. However, following a neat ball in by Magsy, Finn Todd was able to get in front of his marker to knock a neat header past the keeper. The odds of Finn scoring the first goal of the game with his head would have been lucky to have odds shorter that 500/1 but Davies and his Davies snr were delighted.

After the break the game followed a similar trend with Grappenhall always looking comfortable at the back but offering little in the way of a 2nd goal. Davies continued to be vocal from the touchline and this was never more evident than when Pete Jones headed the ball 40 yards towards his own goal in the final stages!! However, Davies was able to relax soon after this incident as the final whistle was blown and Sports reserves had their season underway.

Manager says:

“We knew it would be scrappy and we spoke about our shape, work rate and discipline and the lads responded to that. There is a good spirit developing and that shone through today. Not a game we will all remember but I am delighted and it gives us a base on which to build”.
